2023 Tanzania Safari and Culture Tour


This fabulous tour combines interacting with locals and enjoying incredible natural sights in Tanzania. Visit with Christians who are helping Tanzanian children at the Che Che Community Library and St. Catharines Monastery. Learn about the Maasai way of life in a traditional village. Buy unique crafts at a local market and a social enterprise for people with disabilities. Also, see big game and other wildlife plus a large assortment of colourful birds on not one, but three game drives! This year, we will be staying in brand new lodges built by our long-time in-country partners. This locally owned and operated company invests in their employees and their community. Plus they are game drive experts!

Sunday, Feb 12          Marera View Lodge
Arrive at Mt Kilimanjaro airport (JRO), and transfer to your lodge. Check in and have some free time to relax before dinner.

Monday, Feb 13        Marera View Lodge
Enjoy your first game drive on your safari through Lake Manyara National Park, where we are likely to see zebras, giraffes, buffalos, elephants, hippos, and more.

Tuesday, Feb 14        Marera View Lodge
Today you will visit Karatu, stopping at St. Catharine monastery where Christians are contributing to solutions for local people in poverty.  You may also see Mto wa Mbu village and stop at the nearby school and local market.

Wednesday, Feb 15   Marera View Lodge
We’ll descend into the Ngorongoro Crater this morning for another day on safari. This UNESCO World Heritage site is the globe’s largest intact volcanic crater at 10 miles wide with 2,000 foot high walls. A dense population of large game shelters in the crater. Expect to see cheetahs, wildebeests, hyenas, lions and more. This is one of the most beautiful wildlife havens in the world containing an estimated 30,000 animals.

Thursday, Feb 16      Maramboi Tented Lodge
Visit with members of the Iraqw tribe and learn about their culture. Tour a coffee plantation.  After lunch, go to Tarangire National Park. Immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and scents of the park on a nature walk before settling in for the night.

Friday, Feb 17           Maramboi Tented Lodge
Enjoy a full-day game drive in Tarangire National Park, where more than 2600 sq. km of grassland and floodplains reveal unspoiled views of the nearby volcanic mountain ranges.  The Tarangire River winds through the heart of the valley and attracts numerous migrant animals. Keep your eyes peeled for colourful birds and wildlife in the plains.

Saturday, Feb 18      Four Points by Sheraton Arusha
In Monduli village, visit the Cheche Community Library, started by a Canadian Mennonite, that benefits Maasai children. See their work in action as you meet with locals.  In the distance, be sure to notice the famous volcano “Oldoinyo Lengai”—Maasai for “Mountain God”— among the Monduli Mountains. Onwards to Arusha for your next two nights of lodging.

Sunday, Feb 19        Four Points by Sheraton Arusha
Optional worship with locals at a Mennonite church service this morning.  In the afternoon, visit a social enterprise, SHANGA, to buy crafts made from recyclables by people with disabilities.  Explore the Tanzanite Museum in Arusha to see precious Tanzanite gemstones that are 1000 times rarer than diamonds. At the Emusoi Centre, hear about their work empowering and educating girls from pastoralist/hunter-gather communities like the Maasai.

Monday, Feb 20        Marangu Hotel
Head out to the beautiful Marangu Falls to discover why “Marangu” means place of too many streams. Visit the nearby banana plantations and take a nature walk with members of the Chagga tribe. Savour your last night in Tanzania.

Tuesday, Feb 21        Marangu
Fly back to North America from Mt Kilimanjaro airport (JRO) with new friends and a heart full of memories.
